New Orkut and its Feature

[blippr]Few days back we had an article on new Orkut which was bases on “Orkut blog” and the news on the internet. Since now we have access to the new Orkut let’s have a quick look at some new cool features.

In last article we saw that Google has completely re-written the code using the Google Web Toolkit [GWT], and hence it was expected that Orkut has to get a performance boost. Orkut has maintained its clean look and also added with some cool feature with some glossy and spin effect. We will go through some new feature that we have noticed.

More Personalized.

Personalize Orkut profile color to your personality, though the themes are not enabled in the new Orkut you can still select different colors which could match to your identity and taste in to your new orkut profile.

Comment on user’s status message.

Now you can comment on any of your friend status like in facebook. You can also see the updates done by your friends in the update section and can comment on your friends status and other updates. You can also comment on the videos uploaded by your friends, which are also a most awaited feature, since many people share YouTube videos on Orkut.

New Friend list and community list section.

Now u can see all your friends and community in one page just u need to scroll the section or search friend with hi/her name. You can also select group of friends to be displayed. i.e if you have grouped your friend based on any criteria like best friends, school friend, work etc then you can select those groups from dropdown on the friends section and you will see only those friends in that specific group.

Fast photo upload and improved album management.
Uploading photo has been faster and it could be manages and edited easily. One thing that exited in the album section was drag and rearranges the photo in the album. This was far better than facebook album.

Send pure HTML content Scraps.
This is a good new for those who play with html, you can send HTML through the scraps, this was available in the initial stage of the Orkut but this was blocked by Orkut due to security reason. I am not sure whether it support writing JavaScript. We have tried with some simple HTML like creating table etc its works perfectly fine.

Rich Contents in about me and Testimonials.
As we saw Orkut scraps can be richer than before, so is the about me. You can put HTML, Videos photos into your Orkut about me. You can also copy paste rich html content from any of the site to this section, like we did, we have coped some video details from the YouTube and pasted it into the Orkut about me.. ( lol it worked) . Same can be done to your communities also; you can put rich html contents into your communities about section. For example you can refer to about section of new Orkut community.

Same apples while writing a testimonial to your friend, now you can write some awesome, interactive, graphical testimonials to your friends. (Isn’t that cool… let see how many such comes to my profile.)

Video Chat.
If you remember Orkut already have the Gmail chat application available and it wont take them much of investment to implement the video chat into Orkut. With the integration of video chat, Orkut claim it self to a complete social networking site.
[Now only thing remains in Orkut is capturing videos and photos directly to the Orkut profile... isn’t that cool suggestion: D]

Important part, you are allowed to invite at least 10 of your friends to try this new Orkut. More invites may be added soon, as per the Orkut blog. [Depends on their mood actually ]
