What is Wi-Fi 6 and Why Wi-Fi 6 Matters?
Since the Wi-Fi 802.11 ac was established in 2014, a large number of new devices capable of saturating Wi-Fi networks have come into our lives. Hence, it is now becoming much essential to increase the speed of our connections.
That’s why the organization which is responsible for deciding, developing and certifying all the standards of this technology that have been going on for years, undoubtedly, I am talking about the Wi-Fi Alliance, has recently announced the all-new Wi-Fi 6. But the fact is that what improvements does this new standard offer (Wi-Fi 6)?
What is Wi-Fi 6?
Its name is 802.11 ax, although it will be well-known by the name Wi-Fi 6, as the organization has decided to give each standard a more straightforward name to remember and identify.
So, being the new standard for the coming years, it comes with a significant improvement in speed. While the previous one, of course, the Wi-Fi 5 is capable of reaching 3.5Gbps, while the new one, the Wi-Fi 6, will have a maximum speed of 9.6Gbps.
This is the simple answer, but in reality, both speeds are theoretical maximums, so the devices will never be so fast. What’s more, when divided by the entire network of devices, a computer could never count on such a high transfer rate.
Anyway, the improvement with respect to the previous standard is definite, thanks to the fact that Wi-Fi 6 can combine the spectrum bands 2.4GHz and 5GHz. On the contrary, that happened before when all the connected devices were forced to use the same spectrum to the time.
Better and efficient
The increase in the speed of download and transmission is always ensured with the change of standard, but the Wi-Fi Alliance has also wanted to provide Wi-Fi 6 with other improvements in areas like cybersecurity.
This new standard will make less battery consumption, will have lower latency and greater efficiency and scope. But this year, it will also come with more optimal performance in areas of great affluence like sports stadiums, meetings, and congested areas.
While for now, it seems that the all-new Wi-Fi 6 comes may arrive at the same time, when the Internet of Things or IoT industry will take off, where mobile phones and computers will have to learn to coexist with hundreds of sensors, connected devices, appliances, and much more.
And to achieve this, the all-new Wi-Fi 6 has the possibility of dividing a wireless channel into several subchannels. For this, we should thank the Orthogonal frequency-division multiple access (OFDMA). Each of these subchannels can provide faster data speeds while moving data to different devices at the same time.
On the other hand, the improvement in the use of the battery is due to the TWT (Target Wake Time). This technology simply allows the devices to plan the communication with the routers and reduce the time it takes to keep the antennas turned on when transferring the data.
We all know very well that last year the Wi-Fi standards received an update that improved their security with WPA 3, and it would arrive with Wi-Fi 6 to all the devices that will come on the market with the new standard, which would make them more secure from a computer attack.
When will we have it?
There is still no official date for the arrival of Wi-Fi 6 is confirmed, but it is expected that it will arrive at the end of the year 2019. Yes, it means that for now, simply, we have to wait until 2020 to see the first compatible devices in stores.
